The league which drew 300 million viewers globally, aims to grow further in the coming years
On July 13th, the World Championship of Legends (WCL) drew nearly 20,000 spectators to Edgbaston, captivating cricket fans around the world. The historic match between India and Pakistan was watched by almost 100 million fans on TV, OTT platforms, and social media. Many have dubbed the tournament the "Father of All Rivalries" due to its immense popularity.
The support from the prestigious England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) played a key role in giving the WCL legitimacy and prestige. This support helped attract a stellar roster of players, including current stars without contracts and cricket legends, boosting the league's reputation in the sport.
The WCL's lineup, featuring both current players and legends, guaranteed high competition and excitement. Following the successful IPL model, the WCL incorporated Bollywood into its structure, partnering with Ajay Devgn and having actress Jacqueline Fernandez affiliated with one of the team franchises. This blend of entertainment and cricket significantly increased the league’s appeal.
Unlike other leagues, where most players are retired, the WCL boasts a roster of players who are still active in the sport. This ensured the highest caliber of competition, drawing a diverse range of spectators. As countries like champions India and England competed, the excitement and national pride among fans grew.
WCL founder and CEO Harshit Tomar attributed the league's success to its strategic execution, star power, and entertainment value.
"Fans have come to love the WCL because of its strategic execution, outstanding star power in cricket, and unwavering entertainment value," he said.
