Pakistan-born Australian cricketer Fawad Ahmed was recently named Australia’s spin consultant for the Pakistan tour as he had previously participated in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and knew the conditions.
While speaking to Cricket Pakistan in an exclusive interview, Fawad opened up about his future plans regarding coaching.
“There is always a transition period from being a player and then becoming a coach. However, I wanted to start the process alongside and I have already gone through various coaching session with younger players as they are easier to train,” said Fawad Ahmed.
Speaking about his future plan, the right-arm leg-spinner said that he still wants to play franchise cricket for the time being.
“There aren’t many leg-spin coachers across the globe but I want to play franchise cricket for at least 2-3 more years before I get into coaching,” he added.
“It was a great experience for me to be associated with the Australian side as a spin consultant. This was the first time I got to see how planning happens behind the door because as a player, you don’t get to witness these things. So, it was a huge plus point for myself,” Fawad revealed.
Fawad Ahmed further commented on his emotions after receiving the phone call where Cricket Australia asked him to join the coaching staff for Pakistan series.
“It was a historic series. I remember supporting Pakistan the last time Australia visited Pakistan in the 90s. I had just finished school and that I can still remember that passion,” he said. “I started the conversation with various Australian players and managed their expectations. I felt an obligation to play a role in making sure the series was a success despite being on the other side.”
Having extensive knowledge of Australian conditions, Fawad said he would be delighted to become Pakistan’s spin consultant for the upcoming T20 World Cup granted if he is not selected as a player to represent Australia.
“I have 12-14 years of experience in Australia and I am fully aware of the advantages and disadvantages for spinners in such conditions. I am available to act as a spin consultant for the duration of the World Cup; be it for Pakistan or any other team. It will also be hugely beneficial for my personal growth too,” he remarked.
