Zaheer's final appearance in the IPL was in 2017 when he captained the Delhi Daredevils before retiring from all forms of cricket
Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), filling the vacancy left by Gautam Gambhir's departure after the 2023 season.
Gambhir, who moved to Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor for IPL 2024, has since taken on the role of head coach of the Indian men's cricket team.
Zaheer will also take on the role of bowling coach for LSG, stepping in after Morne Morkel left to join Gambhir's coaching staff with the Indian team. Although Zaheer did not explicitly confirm his bowling coach duties during his media interaction, he hinted at the dual role with a smile, stating, "If I am there in the set-up, does the team need another bowling coach?"
Zaheer's extensive experience in the IPL is well-known. From 2018 to 2022, he served the Mumbai Indians (MI) in key roles, first as director of cricket and later as head of global development. As a player, Zaheer was part of three IPL franchises – MI, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils.
Over ten seasons, he played 100 matches, taking 102 wickets at an economy rate of 7.58. His final appearance in the IPL was in 2017 when he captained the Delhi Daredevils before retiring from all forms of cricket.
As previously reported by ESPNcricinfo, LSG is looking to give Zaheer a broader role that includes involvement in scouting and player development during the off-season. This expanded profile reflects the franchise's commitment to strengthening its foundation as prepares for future challenges.
LSG's coaching set-up continues to be led by Justin Langer, who replaced Andy Flower as head coach ahead of IPL 2024. Langer is supported by assistants Lance Klusener and Adam Voges. Despite securing playoff berths in their first two seasons, LSG narrowly missed out on a top-four spot in IPL 2024 due to net run rate.
Zaheer's return to the IPL as part of LSG's coaching staff comes at a crucial time, with teams gearing up for the upcoming mega auction.
