Former South African fast bowler Charl Langeveldt has been appointed as the bowling coach for the Zimbabwe men's national cricket team. This move comes as part of a restructuring effort following Zimbabwe's failure to qualify for the T20 World Cup recently held in the USA and the West Indies.
Stuart Matsikenyeri, who previously served as the interim head coach before Justin Sammons' full-time appointment, will continue as the team's fielding coach. The coaching staff will also include new additions like assistant coach Dion Ebrahim, strategic performance coach Ravish Gobind, and strength and conditioning coach Curtly Diesel, all of whom are from South Africa.
These appointments were sanctioned by the Mhishi Committee of Inquiry, tasked with assessing the team's shortcomings and outlining necessary changes after Zimbabwe missed out on qualifying for the T20 World Cup. The team faced defeats to Namibia and Uganda, which cost them the chance to advance from the Africa Region Qualifier in November 2023.
Following these disappointing results, Dave Houghton resigned as head coach, citing challenges in getting through to the players. Walter Chawaguta took over temporarily, succeeded later by Matsikenyeri, who led the team in their preparations for the Bangladesh tour in April.
Langeveldt brings significant coaching experience, having worked previously with Afghanistan and been part of coaching setups in Bangladesh and his native South Africa until the end of last year's ODI World Cup in India.
