On Day 2, Madande conceded a staggering 42 runs as byes during Ireland's first innings
Clive Madande, the Zimbabwean wicketkeeper-batter, is experiencing a challenging debut in the ongoing one-off Test match against Ireland at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast. Despite having played 15 ODIs and 30 T20Is, this is Madande’s first Test match, and it has not been smooth sailing.
On Day 2, Madande conceded a staggering 42 runs as byes during Ireland's first innings. This unusual statistic meant that byes were the second-highest run-scorer for Ireland, who were all out for 250. The hosts managed to take a 40-run lead. By the end of the day, Zimbabwe’s openers, Prince Masvaure and Joylord Gumbie, had taken the score to 12/0 at Stumps.
Madande's 42 byes set an unwanted record for the most byes conceded in a Test match, breaking the 90-year-old record of England's Les Ames, who gave away 37 byes against Australia in 1934. Zimbabwe’s total of 59 extras further highlighted their indiscipline.
Madande's struggles were not limited to his wicketkeeping. On Day 1, he was dismissed for a golden duck, adding to his woes. The 24-year-old will be looking to bounce back and make a positive impact as the match progresses.
For Ireland, former Zimbabwe cricketer Peter Moor was the standout performer on Day 2, scoring a crucial 79 runs off 105 balls, including 11 fours. Moor built important partnerships with skipper Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling, helping Ireland recover from early setbacks. A late counter-attack from Matthew Humphreys and Andy McBrine added 47 runs, pushing Ireland to a 40-run lead.
Zimbabwe's bowlers had their moments too. Blessing Muzarabani and Tanaka Chivanga each took three wickets, while Tendai Chatara and Sean Williams chipped in with two wickets apiece.
As the match heads into Day 3, both teams will be eager to gain a strong position. With plenty of cricket left to be played, Madande will hope to put his difficult start behind him and contribute positively to Zimbabwe’s efforts.
