A left-hand opening batsman, Shoaib Khan's selection in Pakistan's squad for a four-nation Twenty20 tournament in Canada in October 2008 was the reason given by chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed for his sudden resignation. Ahmed claimed offspinner Saeed Ajmal had been picked by the three-man selection panel, but the PCB included Shoaib instead when they announced the 15-man squad for the tournament. Shoaib, who plays for Quetta and Baluchistan, had impressive numbers in first-class games for the 2007-08 domestic season. He was by far Quetta's leading run-scorer, with 884 runs from ten matches at 52.00. Days before the squad was named, Shoaib helped his prospects with a 54-ball 85 in a close run-chase against the Lahore Lions in the RBS Twenty20 Cup.
