Afridi reveals which team he will support in 2018 FIFA World Cup

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has revealed the team he will be supporting in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The 2018 edition of the mega event will be organised in Russia and will be played from June 14 to July 15.

Afridi, who played his last international game earlier this month when he led World XI in a charity match against West Indies, disclosed that he will be supporting Jocham Low’s Germany this time around as well.

“As you all know, I have always supported Germany and this time also it won’t be any different,” said Afridi while talking to the media at Asghar Ali Shah Stadium in Karachi.

Germany are the reigning world champions having lifted the trophy four years ago in Brazil, defeating Argentina by 1-0 in the final with a goal from Mario Gotze.

Afridi, who represented Pakistan in 27 Tests, 398 ODIs and 99 T20Is, also shed some light on the Men in Green’s upcoming T20I series against Scotland, where he believes that the visitors should not take the the home side lightly.

“You can’t underestimate any team in T20 cricket and especially the ones which are playing in home conditions,” said Afridi. “Pakistan have been in England for quite a while and have adjusted to the conditions which is why I trust them to not lose against Scotland.”

Afridi also expressed his delight for taking part in the charity match earlier this month. “It was an honour for me and Pakistan to lead a World XI side consisting of top players,” he said. “Such activities should take place whenever required and we as sportsmen should support these initiatives.”
