Joe Root fails to beat Mohammad Yousuf's most Test runs record

After a remarkable run in Test cricket format, Joe Root has failed to surpass Mohammad Yousuf's record for most Test runs in a calendar year as England crumbles against Australia in the Ashes.

The England captain required 108 runs in his final Test innings of the calendar year but fell 80 runs short as he was dismissed by debutant Scott Boland for 28 runs.

This is not the first time Mohammad Yousuf's record has been threatened as previously Graeme Smith, Micheal Clarke, and Sachin Tendulkar all came close to beating the record but failed to do so despite playing more Test matches.

Joe Root ended 2021 with 1,708 runs in total; two short of West Indies legend Viv Richards who ranks second in the list behind one of Pakistan's most elegant batters, Yousuf.

Sachin Tendulkar has been edged out of the top-five batters with most Test runs in a calendar year as Joe Root has firmly secured the third position in a list filled with talented cricketers.

Here is the list of players who have scored the most Test runs in a calendar year led by Mohammad Yousuf:

  • Mohammad Yousuf
    • 11 matches, 19 innings, 1,788 runs (2006)
  • Sir Vivian Richards
    • 11 matches, 19 innings, 1,710 runs (1976)
  • Joe Root
    • 15 matches, 29 innings, 1,708 runs (2021)
  • Graeme Smith
    • 15 matches, 25 innings, 1,656 runs (2008)
  • Micheal Clarke
    • 11 matches, 18 innings, 1,595 runs (2012)
