The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s Cricket Committee head Mohsin Khan has suggested that Test captaincy should be handed over to any other senior player in order to give relief to wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed.

In an interview after taking charge as the chairman of the four-member committee, Mohsin said that the Karachi-born keeper looked exhausted after captaining the side in all three formats, which according to him was the reason for team’s failure in the Asia Cup

"I have said it before and I will say it now too," said Khan while talking to a local channel as per ESPNCricinfo. “Sarfraz’s body language was so down in the tournament [Asia Cup] that I felt sorry for him. I was saying you got a new guy in, don't put the burden of [captaining the side in all] three formats on him. It will make him exhausted.”

He added: "I had said make him T20I and ODI captain and in Tests, put in a senior player for a year, year-and-a-half which will give him [Sarfraz] time, allow him to relax and groom himself as a leader, to get some confidence."

However, Mohsin further went on to clear that PCB’s Cricket Committee do not possess the power to remove captain or any other official from their post, as they are only there to give recommendations to the board chairman.

"Yes, absolutely I have spoken to Ehsan Mani,” he said. “But the final decision will of course be his but I will give him the suggestion. Whatever suggestions I give, it will not be out of personal interest. I will only suggest those things that will help make Pakistan better on or off the field.”

Talking about the upcoming series against New Zealand, the 63-year-old believes it will give a clearer picture about whether Sarfraz is mentally strong enough to lead the team in all three formats.

"This New Zealand series will give us a better picture of how much mentally strong Sarfraz has become,” said Mohsin. “I will repeat that I only said this because he is still young and he doesn't need this much pressure on him. He needs some relief time because wicketkeeping itself is such a difficult job."
