'Sad' Azhar Mahmood reacts after IPL postponement

Pakistan’s former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, in a Tweet on Tuesday, expressed his sadness while reacting to the postponement of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a decision which was taken due to the rise in Covid-19 cases in India.

The 46-year-old stated that the worldwide pandemic had created several challenges and it was sad to see another big tournament being affected.

“We are in a worldwide pandemic - faced with several challenges. It’s sad to see another big tournament being affected - however it’s the right decision taken at this point. It’s important to understand nothing can be water tight and working against a pandemic is challenging itself,” Azhar Tweeted.

Earlier, the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket tournament had been indefinitely suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis in the country, IPL chairman Brijesh Patel told Reuters on Tuesday.

“The tournament stands suspended, we are looking for another window,” Patel said. “Right now we can’t say when we can reschedule it.”

Monday’s match in Ahmedabad had to be rescheduled after two Kolkata Knight Riders players tested positive for COVID-19 and two non-playing members of the Chennai Super Kings franchise contracted the virus in Delhi.

India’s tally of coronavirus infections surged past 20 million on Tuesday, following 357,229 new cases over the last 24 hours, as the country battles a second wave of the disease.
