Zaheer Abbas among contenders for PCB Cricket Committee Chairman

Former Pakistan cricketer Zaheer Abbas, who was recently inducted in the ICC Hall of Fame, is among contenders for the next chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Cricket Committee.

Earlier, the PCB had accepted Iqbal Qasim’s controversial resignation as Chairman of the committee and is likely to announce his replacement next week.

In his resignation on Thursday, September 3, Qasim wrote: “(He was a) dummy chairman who cannot recommend a deserving match referee. It is painful to see injustice (being) done to cricketers who have played cricket, fulfill all criteria but suffering.”

The PCB is keen on ensuring that the committee’s new chairman is a like-minded individual who agrees with the board’s structural changes.

Apart from Abbas, former cricketers Intikhab Alam and Saleem Yousaf are also in the running for the post. Sources have also confirmed that more than eight former cricketers, in total, are being considered for the role by the PCB.

One of the committee members, which comprises of Wasim Akram, Umar Gul, Ali Naqvi and Urooj Mumtaz, is also pushing the PCB to include his/her name in the list of officials sent to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the role of match referee. If this happens, the PCB will also have to find a replacement for that person in the near future as well.

The cricket committee’s next meeting is likely to take place in the third week of September, where a detailed discussion regarding Pakistan’s tour of England will be the main agenda.
