Zimbabwe tri-series in danger after assassination attempt on president

The organisation of the T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe is in danger after an assassination attempt on Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday.

The series is scheduled to start from July 1 and will include hosts Zimbabwe, Australia and Pakistan.

But according to a report published on cricket.com.au, Cricket Australia are monitoring the situation of the country and are waiting to make the final decision regarding team’s participation in the tournament.

"The safety and security of our players and support staff is paramount and as always, we will take advice from the relevant Australian authorities," a CA spokesperson said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is warning Australians that "instances of conflict cannot be ruled out in the lead up to, during and soon after the election" and "the security situation could deteriorate quickly", whereas Australian visitors are currently advised to "exercise a high degree of caution in Zimbabwe".

General election in Zimbabwe is due to hold on July 30, where president Mnangagwa will try to strengthen his position as the head of the state.
