All-rounder Imad Wasim has criticised Babar Azam following Pakistan's defeat to Australia on Friday in the ICC World Cup 2023 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Babar-led side fell short by 62 runs in their attempt to chase a 368-run target set by Australia, with Pakistan captain's individual performance under scrutiny after being dismissed for just 18 runs in 14 balls.

While speaking on a local TV channel, Wasim pointed out that Azam has not secured a victory for Pakistan against a major team since 2019.

“At the world stage there is pressure but it is also the place where you prove your worth. I think the last time Babar performed in a big match was against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup, when he scored a century. But after that he is yet to win a big match for Pakistan. This is not criticism but a fact,” Wasim said.

Wasim further highlighted that, given Azam's position as the number one batter in ODIs, there is an inherent responsibility for him to lead the team to victories.

“Being the number one batter in ODIs, it is Babar’s responsibility to win matches but questions will be raised if he doesn’t do that. He needs to bat in accordance with the team’s requirement. He has the ability to dominate bowlers and this World Cup is the place to do that,” he added.
