A bookie was caught after setting a trap in Rawalpindi according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s Director Security and Anti-Corruption lieutenant colonel Asif Mehmood.

According to the details one suspicious person was caught from the ground during Pakistan, South Africa Test match. He was constantly giving information about the match to someone through the phone. Later, he was handed over to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Surprisingly accreditation card was issued to this person by the PCB but Mehmood clarified that this was done deliberately.

“We had full details of the person mentioned, we wouldn’t let him into the stadium if we wanted to but it does not help, we wanted to reach the network. To get proof we allowed him to come which is why accreditation card was also made. If we would have caught him earlier, we would not have got the information that we found. We found that he had contact with someone in Dubai,” said Mehmood.

Mehmood also stated that no proof of the bookie’s relations with players, so far, has been revealed.

He added that Pakistani players should not shy away from giving information about suspicious contact as we do not disclose their information. They should fulfill their responsibility by telling us about the suspicious contact. Then we don’t bother them at all.

He further stated: “Once laws are made to stop corruption in sports it would be a great help for us, as the punishment of murder is death so people are afraid, like this if there is risk of jail, fines and property confiscation so bookies will be scared of doing this. Police and FIA will also get help for proceedings. We don’t have an option of getting information of the bank accounts and properties of the players but if there is an unusual activity it becomes known, in case of doubt we can take the mobile of the player and check.”
