Former Sri Lankan cricketer Dhammika Niroshana, 41, was fatally shot at his home in Ambalangoda, Galle district, on Tuesday night (July 16), according to local reports.
The incident occurred in the presence of his wife and two children. Police have yet to apprehend the unidentified shooter, and a thorough investigation is ongoing, with the motive still unknown.
Niroshana, a right-arm fast bowler and capable lower-order batsman, was considered a promising talent in his early career. Between 2001 and 2004, he played 12 first-class and 8 List-A matches for Galle Cricket Club, accumulating over 300 runs and taking 19 wickets.
He debuted for the Sri Lankan U19 team in 2000, playing under-19 Test and ODI cricket for two years, and captained the U19 team in 10 matches.
Notable players like Farveez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, and Upul Tharanga played under his leadership and later represented Sri Lanka at the highest level.
Niroshana's career, however, did not progress significantly, with his last competitive match played in December 2004.
