‘Franchises don’t have money’: Latif weighs in on possibility of auction in PSL

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif likes the idea of introducing auction in the seventh edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) but also believes that there should be a limit on spending because franchises don’t have enough money.

On Saturday, Cricket Pakistan had reported that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and HBL PSL franchises are considering the possibility of using auction instead of drafting for the next season. 

According to sources, PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja, who had his first meeting with the franchises on Friday, is keen on making PSL bigger than the Indian Premier League (IPL) and believes that an auction could prove useful in attracting top-tier cricketers. It must be noted that an auction can lead to higher wages as compared to a draft system of pre-determined salaries.

“We will know the real value of players through the auction. Maybe a player worth 25 million might be sold for 30 million…but the cap should remain the same, I think, because franchises don’t have so much money,” said Latif while speaking on his official YouTube channel ‘Caught Behind’.

He also urged the PCB to increase its investment inorder to attract top quality players.  

“PCB should also double its investment [to attract top players]. If franchises are spending four million, then the PCB should also do the same and invest four million,” he concluded.
