England fast bowler Gus Atkinson delivered an outstanding performance, taking 7-45 on the first day of the Test against the West Indies at Lord’s. This overshadowed England legend James Anderson, who, in his 188th and final Test, managed just one wicket.

Atkinson's incredible spell was pivotal in dismissing the West Indies for a mere 121 runs. England then solidified their position with attacking half-centuries from Zak Crawley (76) and Ollie Pope (57), reaching 189-3 by stumps, a lead of 68 runs.

The 26-year-old Atkinson's memorable debut saw him remove West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite with just his second ball and later secure three wickets in an extraordinary post-lunch over.

Among those cheering him on was his father Ed, whose words might have added to the pressure of this landmark match.

"I was a bit nervous this morning. I woke up, and all I could think about was the day ahead. I was emotional," Atkinson told reporters after stumps. "I tried to stay as level-headed as possible, but my dad kept saying, 'This is the biggest day of your life.' I just said, 'Relax! I'm trying not to think like that!'"
