In a nail-biting final, India emerged victorious in the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa by seven runs, bringing home their first ICC trophy in 11 years under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. The final, played on Saturday, was a gripping encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
India’s triumph marks their first ICC title since they won the Champions Trophy in 2013 against England. The victory also made India only the third team, alongside England and the West Indies, to win the T20 World Cup twice, having first claimed the title in 2007 by defeating Pakistan.
The win brought significant financial rewards, with India earning $2.45 million from the ICC for their outstanding performance. South Africa, playing in their first-ever T20 World Cup final, secured $1.28 million as the runners-up. The semi-finalists, Afghanistan and England, each took home $787,500, while Pakistan, despite not advancing past the group stage, received $247,500 for their third-place finish in the group.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions for both teams. Batting first, India posted a total of 176 runs for the loss of seven wickets, largely thanks to a stellar innings by Virat Kohli, who scored 76 runs off 59 balls. Kohli's knock included six fours and two sixes, setting a solid foundation for India’s defense.
South Africa’s chase started on a shaky note with the early losses of Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram. However, Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs stabilized the innings with a 68-run partnership, bringing South Africa back into contention. The momentum seemed to swing firmly in their favor when Heinrich Klaasen blasted Axar Patel for 22 runs in the 15th over.
Yet, the tide turned dramatically in the 16th and 17th overs, when Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya delivered exceptional spells. Their efforts put India back in control, ultimately restricting South Africa to 169 runs for eight wickets in their 20 overs. Pandya was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Bumrah took two each, and Patel chipped in with one.
