Concerns have been raised about Naqvi's appointment as the Interior Minister, suggesting that the ICC might perceive it as political interference in cricket affairs and take action against Pakistan
Mohsin Naqvi was elected as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on February 6 for a three-year term.
At that time, he was also serving as the caretaker chief minister of Punjab, but he has recently been appointed as the Interior Minister as well.
The post of PCB chairman is honorary, but it also comes with numerous perks and privileges. Naqvi also announced on social media recently that he will not be taking any salary as the Interior Minister.
Concerns have been raised about his appointment as the Interior Minister, suggesting that the International Cricket Council (ICC) might perceive it as political interference in cricket affairs and take action against Pakistan. However, the ICC has no objection to Naqvi's two terms, as they do not consider it political interference.
The ICC sources has clarified that in the past, political figures in countries like India have also held top positions in cricket boards. Nazmul Hassan, President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, is currently serving as the Youth and Sports Minister.
Allegations of political interference in a country's cricket board cannot be made without a past or present board member being involved. The ICC reviews such complaints and then decides whether to take action against the member country or not. Currently, there is no concern regarding Pakistan in this regard.
It is worth noting that due to the increase in Naqvi's ministerial duties, there is a renewed push to bring a powerful CEO to the board. This will require amending the constitution. Otherwise, Salman Naseer will be given another position, and someone else will be appointed as CEO.
