Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has said that the upcoming five-match ODI series against South Africa will prove to be helpful as the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales approaches.

While speaking to media ahead of the first ODI against South Africa, Malik said it is important to stick with the current bunch of players and give them confidence.

“I think the best thing is to fine your product and stick with a selected bunch of players who have the confidence that they are going to play the World Cup,” said Malik. “Every game is important but we are preparing bearing in mind the mega event.”

He added: “It is great preparation heading into the World Cup as we are playing against one of the best sides in the world.”

He also appreciated the performance of youngsters in the recent past.

“We have a bunch of good players who are performing well and as we reach the mega event, they will play more cricket and gain experience which is going to prove helpful,” he said.

Malik was also optimistic about Pakistan’s chances ahead of the 50-over series against Proteas.

“We have done well, both, home and away in white-ball cricket,” he said. “Its all about turning up on the given day and performing but as far as preparations go, we are up for the series.”

The former Pakistan captain also strived for consistency ahead of the challenging series.

“Consistency is important in, both, batting and bowling and that is going to be once again our goal in the upcoming series,” he said.

The first ODI between Pakistan and South Africa will be played in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, January 19.
