Pakistan secured a thumping 142-run victory in the first One Day International (ODI) against Afghanistan in Sri Lanka's Hambantota on Tuesday. The win came majorly due to the outstanding performance of Pakistan's pacers, including Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah.

In the first ODI, Pakistan went with their spin-bowling all-rounders, including Usama Mir and Shadab Khan. Despite Mohammad Nawaz providing an option of variety with his left-arm spin, Usama was given preference due to his performance earlier this year against New Zealand. He took six wickets and achieved his best figures of 4/43.

However, Usama's performance in the first match against Afghanistan wasn't convincing enough. The spinner wasn't able to bag any wicket, amassing 18 runs in his three overs, including two boundaries. Furthermore, Usama was only able to manage two runs with the bat.

Given Usama's performance, Pakistan might consider a change in the second ODI against Afghanistan, which involves bringing in Muhammad Nawaz to replace Usama Mir.

Nawaz's track record in international cricket will undoubtedly contribute to his inclusion in the playing XI. His ability to contribute effectively with the bat lower down the order, coupled with his knack for breaking partnerships, makes him a valuable asset for the team.

Nonetheless, skipper Babar Azam is known for providing opportunities to the players to prove themselves in the longer run. His approach encompasses mentorship and a supportive environment. Babar adopted the same approach with Nawaz by giving him fairer chances whenever required and might do the same with Usama too.

Pakistan's expected playing XI:

Fakhar Zaman, Imam ul Haq, Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Usama Mir, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf

Pakistan squad for Afghanistan series:

Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (captain), Salman Ali Agha, Iftikhar Ahmed, Tayyab Tahir, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Haris, Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi
