The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is unsure about the composition of its new selection committee after the resignation of former chief selector Misbahul Haq.

According to sources, the board is keen on continuing the existing system, which involves coaches of regional teams as part of selection committee, but the top contender for the next chief selector, Mohammad Akram, isn’t in favour of this setup.

Akram also had stated this during an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, recently.

“The six [regional] coaches who are working at the moment are very experienced and there input will be taken even if they are part of the selection committee or not. They are close to the players and it’s beneficial for us to have them as part of the process,” said Akram. “Although, ideally I want the traditional selection committee setup because it is difficult to be the coach and selector, at the same time, as I have experienced that in the past. The relationship between the coach and players in the dressing could deteriorate because of this.”

If PCB is unable to convince Akram to join the existing system, Northern’s Head Coach Mohammad Wasim could be given the role of chief selector.

Meanwhile, former wicketkeeper-batsman Rashid Latif’s name is also in the mix for the role of chief selector, after his contract with PTV Sports was terminated, but his sour relationship with PCB Cricket Committee member Wasim Akram is a hindrance in this regard. According to sources, Akram holds great influence within PCB and all major decisions include his input.

The final decision about formation of selection committee and its chief selector is likely to be taken in the next few days.
