Najam Sethi recently announced his withdrawal from the race to become the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Shortly after that, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his capacity as the Patron of PCB, exercised his authority and nominated Zaka Ashraf and Mustafa Ramday as potential candidates for the hot seat.
Upon being asked who would he select between Sethi and Ashraf, former Pakistan captain, Shahid Afridi, stated that it is high time that we should let go of the people who are rather getting old and introduce young faces instead.
"I would've rested both of these senior citizens. I wouldn't have wanted anyone above 60 or 65 years to reclaim this seat. Both of them are now quite old. They need to go, rest and count God's beads. The way I see it, we need young blood in this place, individuals who can bring in new ideas," Afridi said.
Moreover, Afridi also appealed to the new chair for continuity till World Cup. He urged to let things be till the mega event happens.
"I'd request whoever the new chairman is coming, please let World Cup happen, let things be the way they are at least till World Cup, and then do whatever you want because we are already short on time," he further added.
Afridi's comments suggest that there is a growing appetite for change within the PCB, particularly younger leadership. Sethi is 75 years old, while Zaka Ashrat is 70 years old, and that is the very reason Afridi believes that they are out of touch with the needs of the modern game.
