In Pakistan’s final group match of the T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland, Shaheen Shah Afridi showcased his bowling prowess by claiming three crucial wickets during the powerplay, ending with figures of 3-22 in his allotted four overs.

This achievement marks the second time a Pakistani bowler has taken three wickets in a T20I powerplay, with the first instance achieved by Imad Wasim in 2016 and 2018. Other notable Pakistani pacers who have accomplished this feat include Mohammad Amir, Sohail Tanvir, and Umar Gul, each achieving it once in their careers.

Shaheen Afridi’s impactful performance against Ireland contrasts with his earlier outings in the tournament. In previous matches against India and Canada, he managed only one wicket each, while going wicket-less in the game against the USA, which Pakistan lost. However, in the current match against Ireland, Shaheen’s contributions, alongside Imad Wasim’s three-wicket haul and Mohammad Amir’s two-wicket spell, played a pivotal role in restricting Ireland to a modest total of 106/9.

Despite their strong showing against Ireland, Pakistan’s victory in this match holds no bearing on their T20 World Cup journey, as they were already eliminated from the tournament prior to this fixture. After winning the toss and opting to bowl first in Lauderhill, Florida, Pakistan’s bowlers executed their plans effectively, putting Ireland under pressure from the onset.

With their campaign in the T20 World Cup coming to an end after this game, Pakistan will head home with mixed emotions, reflecting on missed opportunities and commendable performances throughout the tournament.
