Washington Freedom, a Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise, has announced Steve Smith, the veteran Australian batter, as their captain for the MLC 2024 season. Known for his stellar leadership record with Australia, Smith brings a wealth of experience to the role, having led his national team to numerous victories in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

The franchise made the official announcement on social media platform X, where they welcomed Smith with the tagline, “Oh Captain, Our Captain, Smudge is all set to lead the Freedom squad for #MLC2024.”

Smith, renowned for his impactful performances in cricket leagues worldwide, previously captained IPL teams like Pune Warriors, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Rajasthan Royals. His leadership stint with Rising Pune Supergiants saw them reach the IPL 2017 final.

Previously, Moises Henriques, Smith's former teammate from Australia, led Washington Freedom in the MLC 2023 season, where the team reached the playoffs but fell short against inaugural champions MI New York. During that season, only one player, Matt Short, surpassed 150 runs for the franchise.
