Vaughan: Is there a team who scored 500 runs in a single day?

Former England captain Michael Vaughan was delighted with his team's batting performance against Pakistan in the first Test today in Rawalpindi.

After England skipper Ben Stokes opted to bat first, openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who both struck centuries, took the attack to Pakistan's bowlers, adding 233 runs for the first wicket in 36 overs.

While discussing about the match, Vaughan wondered if any team had ever reached 500 runs on the first day of a Test match.

Although 500 runs have been scored in a single day of a Test match in the past, they have never been scored on the first day.

The most runs scored on the first day of a Test match were 494 in a match between Australia and South Africa in Sydney in 1910.

Meanwhile, 588 runs have been scored on any day of a Test match, with the highest being set on day two of an England-India contest in 1936.

England's strong batting provided a perfect start to the Test — its first in Pakistan in 17 years — after the start was threatened Wednesday when many squad members were ill with an unknown ailment.
