Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as the captain of Sri Lanka's T20I team following their early exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.
Appointed as captain just last year, the Sri Lankan spinner led the team in 10 matches.
In his resignation letter, as stated by Sri Lanka Cricket, Hasaranga expressed that he believes resigning from the captaincy is in the team's best interest, allowing him to continue contributing as a player.
“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Hasaranga wrote in his resignation letter to SLC.
Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Hasaranga will remain a vital part of Sri Lanka's squad. The team is set to face India in a home white-ball bilateral series starting July 26.
According to SLC, India will arrive in Sri Lanka on July 22, with the T20I series commencing on July 26. The second and third T20Is are slated for July 27 and 29, respectively, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
Following the T20I series, both teams will head to Colombo for the ODI series. The first ODI is scheduled for August 1, with the subsequent matches on August 4 and 7 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
