In the midst of political turmoil in Bangladesh, former cricket captain and current member of parliament Shakib Al Hasan is facing severe backlash from cricket fans for his silence.

Shakib, who is currently in Canada participating in the GT20 league, was confronted by Bangladeshi fans chanting slogans against him. Despite the uproar, Shakib chose not to respond and walked away silently.

The former skipper, elected to the National Assembly under the Awami League banner led by Sheikh Hasina Wazed, has been criticized for not addressing the unrest in his home country.

During a recent GT20 Canada 2024 match, a fan questioned Shakib about the political situation in Bangladesh.

A fan recently questioned him about it at the GT20 Canada 2024, to which Shakib replied, "What did you do for the country?" His remarks further angered cricket fans.

Mohammed Jalal Yunus, Chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's Cricket Operations Committee, commented on the incident and expressed his disapproval.

“I haven’t seen the video, so it wouldn’t be right for me to comment. However, what he did was certainly not correct. Everyone has contributions in different areas, and questioning Shakib’s contributions wasn’t appropriate,” Jalal said.

The political unrest in Bangladesh has also affected other prominent figures. On Monday, demonstrators set fire to the home of former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who is also a member of parliament for the Khulna Division under the Awami League.

Mortaza, re-elected in Bangladesh’s general elections earlier this year, saw his home damaged and set ablaze following Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s departure from the country.
