Captain Hayley Matthews shone as West Indies women comfortably defeated Pakistan in the first ODI of their series on Thursday at the National Bank Stadium (NBS) in Karachi.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, opener Matthews led by example with a magnificent innings of 140 runs off 150 balls, including 15 boundaries and a six.
Partnering with Shemaine Campbelle, Matthews contributed to a vital 102-run partnership for the second wicket after the early loss of Rashada Williams for just 1 run in the third over.
Campbelle played a supporting role with 45 runs off 71 deliveries, while Chinelle Henry added a brisk 23 runs from as many balls, helping West Indies post a formidable total of 269-8 in their allotted 50 overs.
Pakistan's bowlers Sadia Iqbal and Tuba Hassan were the most successful, claiming two wickets each.
In response, the Pakistani team struggled to build partnerships and was ultimately bowled out for 156 runs in 35.5 overs, falling short by a significant margin of 113 runs.
Tuba was the top scorer for Pakistan with 25 runs, but their efforts were insufficient to chase down the target set by West Indies.
Following her outstanding batting performance, Matthews continued to make an impact with the ball, capturing three wickets for just 17 runs in her six overs. Afy Fletcher and Zaida James also contributed with two wickets each.
The series will continue with three more ODIs, followed by five T20Is scheduled from April 26 to May 3.
