“World Cup or tri-series?” ICC's mascots reveal video draws flak from fans

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a pair of mascots for the forthcoming 2023 Men's Cricket World Cup, set to be hosted in India this October and November.

The unveiling of these mascots took place at an event in Gurugram, India, where the captains of the reigning U19 World Cup Champions, Yash Dhull and Shafali Verma, were present.

Originating from a distant cricket utopia called the Crictoverse, the male and female mascots represent distinct traits that stand as symbols of both gender equality and diversity.

Speaking about the unveiling of the mascots, ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said: “We are delighted to launch the ICC’s mascot duo ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

"The perpetual characters signify cricket's universal appeal beyond cultures and boundaries with the mascots standing as beacons of unity and passion. With representation of both genders, they epitomize the vital role of gender equality in our dynamic world.”

Nonetheless, the cricket enthusiasts were less than pleased with the video released by the ICC on platform X, which introduced the mascots while showcasing players solely from India, Australia, and England.

The promotional video featured prominent names such as India's Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, England's Jos Buttler, and Australian women's team all-rounder Elysse Perry.
