Shan Masood opens up on series defeat against South Africa

Shan Masood reflected on Pakistan’s 2-0 defeat to South Africa, highlighting both the positives and areas for improvement. Speaking after the loss, Masood acknowledged the team's fightback but pointed out the need to improve in crucial moments of the game.

“There have been a lot of good things in this series,” Masood said. “We did well in Centurion, but we didn’t close out situations when it mattered most. We didn’t start well with both bat and ball, and we folded early on what was a really nice surface,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Masood was encouraged by the team’s resilience. “The fightback was important, and those are the responses you look for. We need to learn how to win in crucial moments. We’ve been good at handling adversity, as shown in the England series where we bounced back. You trust your players to learn from tough experiences,” Shan explained.

On his own performance, Masood emphasized that he never focuses on personal achievements. “I don’t look at personal records. The goal is always to contribute to the team and ensure it ends on the right side of the result,” he further added. He also praised Babar Azam for stepping up when Pakistan lost Saim Ayub, recognizing the qualities that emerged during the series.

While the defeat was disappointing, Masood highlighted the positive traits in the team, stressing that there have been key characteristics in the squad that have stood firm in challenging situations.

South Africa defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets on the fourth day of the second Test at Newlands, completing a 2-0 series sweep. The hosts chased down the 58-run target in just 7.1 overs, with David Bedingham scoring an unbeaten 47* off 30 balls and Aiden Markram adding 14 runs.

Earlier, Pakistan's second innings ended at 478, with Shan Masood (145), Babar Azam (81), Salman Ali Agha (48) and Mohammad Rizwan (41) contributing to a partnership of 88 runs. Aamir Jamal fought with 34, but South Africa’s bowlers, led by Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj (three wickets each), bowled them out for the target.

With this victory, South Africa dominated the series, clinching a comprehensive 2-0 win.
