Pakistan’s batsman Abdullah Shafique, in an interview with Grassroots Cricket on Monday, revealed that he wanted to play as an opener in the longest format of the sport for the national side.

The 21-year-old stated that he was working hard to improve himself which was the requirement of the sport at the highest level.

“I would like to play as an opener. I have been opening from the start. I have an idea of how to play in the top order. Maybe they have seen something in me. The way my season had gone, I am trying for improvement and I have been through the camps as well. I am trying hard to learn and improve as quickly as possible because improvement matters a lot at this level. It is quite tough at this stage as compared to the domestic level. We have to work really hard and then perform on the ground. I will try to give my 100 percent in whatever chance I get and at any position. That is the only thing in my hands and that is all I can do,” Shafique said.

The youngster also believed that if a cricketer was familiar with the basics of the sport, then switching between formats would not be a major problem.

“If you know the basics then you can play all the formats of cricket. In T20s you have to set your shots which is a bit of a mental game. You just have to be mentally strong because the ball is changing from red to white and that is all. There is nothing else. Your basics should be good and you can play every format,” he concluded.
